'Railway Employees' Exhibition

train crews

This exhibition will look at the daily lives of railway staff and employees from the opening of the station in 1861 through to closure in 1962.
We are very fortunate at Kirkby Stephen because we know a lot about the early staff at the station back in Stockton & Darlington Railway days. They have been named and brought to life for us through the writings of Poet John Close and his celebration of the honourable leadership provided by station master Deacon William Hogg. Everyday life at the station continues through to the life and times of last station master Percy Sargison who retired in 1962.

If you are a former employee or a one-time user of the station be sure to help our project by either recording your memories in writing or contacting us to arrange to use the oral history facility.
This exhibition will be at Kirkby Stephen East at weekends during July and may be at other venues in the area. Check back here for details.
